The Korean War Baby is very alarmed at this announcement that affects many NGO’s in the Republic of Korea (South Korea). The KWB endorses GOA’L as the best option for Korean Adoptees looking for help in finding their adoption agencies, help in birth family searches (if they are so inclined), help in living in Korea, and many other short and long term needs. As one of the 12 founding members I totally support the new leadership of GOA’L in their efforts to keep on providing the help that thousands of KADs have found over the years.
Let us support in anyway possible the ability of GOA’L to be able to help not only KADLinKs (Korean ADoptees Living in Korea) community, but the greater GLOBAL community that have yet to make their pilgrimage to the motherland. Every KAD must process for themselves the various levels and degrees from First Visit to beginning a Birth Family search. The government’s decision is a serious blow to us all. It is with great disappointment and utmost urgency that I report the current state of G.O.A.’L which has remained the only adoptee non-profit and non-governmental organization in Korea since 1998. For many years G.O.A.’L has operated with the assistance and subsidies from the Ministry of Health and Welfare (보건복지부) for not only programs and services but also for staff. We also rely on corporation and company sponsorship, membership dues, fundraising and donations. G.O.A.’L has exceeded many people’s expectations and provided more with what little amount it receives compared to the other organizations.

Over the past few months the Ministry of Health and Welfare has gone through changes in funding processes, policies and overall direction when it comes to post adoption services here in Korea and abroad. During this time G.O.A.’L worked with the various adoption agencies as well as other adoptee related organizations to participate in defining what the Ministry should fund, how it should be funded, requiring surveys and evaluations on programs and services as well as allowing adoptees to be a part of the decision making process.


Recently the Ministry of Health and Welfare has decided to no longer support G.O.A.’L in certain areas like Birth Family Search, staff wages and certain programs and services. Unlike other organizations, G.O.A.’L does not have a consistent source of revenue to provide for its staff and operating costs. G.O.A.’L requires sufficient planning and notice to prepare for such changes but cannot continue to operate without this year’s subsidy. This was explained to the Ministry of Health and Welfare many times but they claim they cannot continue to support G.O.A.’L in these areas. Ironically funding and support will continue for things like events and program-based services.

As a result, effective immediately G.O.A.’L is forced to temporarily close its doors due to the lack of financial support and economic hardship. G.O.A.’L still believes in having an adoptee organization provide programs and services to adoptees, provide oversight and input to Korean government and adoption agencies, and be a voice on behalf of the community. In the coming days and weeks, G.O.A.’L will be meeting with its Board of Directors, key stakeholders and supporters. We ask for your continued support and understanding. G.O.A.’L will continue to serve the adoptee community in whatever capacity we can as it is our mission and responsibility. Further explanations will be posted on our website, blog, forum, Facebook, Twitter and other forms of communication.

The Korean War Baby wants all to know that though he has had problems with the past election process and proceedure  (which needs to be revised to include ALL members and supporters to be able to VOTE for leadership by electronic means-This is the 21st century, yes?) the KWB completely endorses the new leadership of GOA’L and the staff that is working for the Global and local community of Korean Adoptees. With even InKas affected by the government’s cutback it is very alarming, but we can help by giving support, all who have had help in the past, present, as a way of thanks and providing the help that future KADs will need in their return to the motherland.

Candlelight Vigils-Coming Again Soon?

 Back in 2008 the Korean society went absolutely nuts about American Beef coming into the country after FALSE REPORTING on a major network erroneously claimed that thousands of people in the USA actually had MAD COW DISEASE. The MBC program claimed that 200,000 people who had Alzheimer's were infected with MAD COW, this came from another ‘infamous’ wacko who has made outrageous claims in his spurious books. With little proof and with inadequate response by the Korean government, citizens took to the streets, students cried out “I am too young to die, don’t make me eat US Beef!”

New York City Reports 41% Pregnancies Result in Abortion!

Someone sent me an email that ‘questions your facts on abortion numbers’ in South Korea.  They could not believe that Abortions were as high as 4,000 PER DAY, and practically accused the KWB of, well inflating the numbers, claiming that they had only seen ONE THOUSAND PER DAY.
WELL, being an unlettered simple person, I DO try to get several sources for facts and still don’t put faith completely in just 2, and I have copies of dozens of articles from the net on Abortion/Korea. Doesn’t take a ‘rocket scientist to factcheck. HOWEVER, anyone can check on GOOGLE or other Search Engines for themselves- “abortion korea 1,000 4,000” and you would get the many results in nanoseconds.

“Like it or not, the legality of abortion is a settled question in New York for the time being,” said Greg Pfundstein, executive director of the Chiaroscuro Foundation. “That doesn’t mean we have to accept the fact that in parts of the city nearly half of all pregnancies end in abortion.”

 Illegal abortion, South Korea's open secret

“At a clinic in a fashionable area of Seoul, young women sit in plush leather couches waiting for a doctor to give them an illegal abortion. By the hundreds of thousands each year South Korean women have gone to clinics like this, which operate in the open.

Abortions have been illegal for almost as long as South Korea has existed but, in an uneasy compromise, law enforcement officials have been willing to look the other way as long as qualified doctors perform the operation.
The law allows for abortion only in cases where the mother's health is at risk, the baby is to be born with severe birth defects or the pregnancy was caused by a sexual crime (Rape/Incest).
"Most abortions are for pregnancies out of wedlock and not for health reasons," Park said.  According to the most recent figures, an estimated 350,000 abortions were performed in 2005. That is equivalent to about 43.7 percent of the total number of babies born that year. (450,000 Births PLUS the 350,000 = 800,000 total Pregnancies SO, help my math here, 350,000 equals 43.7 percent.)

• Sexual assault, incest
• Danger to mother’s health
• Hereditary disease (including psychiatric disease, hemophilia, epilepsy, etc.)
• Contagious disease (including AIDS and hepatitis)

South Korea looks at Legalizing Abortions

SEOUL, July 28, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Early-term abortion may be legalized in South Korea, according to a Ministry of Justice committee considering changes to the law, reports the Korean journal JoongAng Daily.
Official data from the Ministry of Health indicates that doctors perform about 350,000 abortions per year, while they deliver on average just 450,000 babies, meaning 43.7 percent of pregnancies end in abortion.
However, the actual number of abortions may be at least five times the official estimate, with a spokesman from the ruling Grand National Party saying that a National Assembly inspection last October found that the number of illegal abortions in Korea exceeds 1.5 million a year or roughly 4,000 babies aborted per day. (KWB notes: This is also the 700+ OBGYNs of Pro-Life Doctors who know the medications {RU-486 and Plan B} that are considered Medical Proceedures to eliminate 'Unexpected' pregnancies)

The move by the Ministry of Justice to look at legalization of abortion seems to fly in the face of the government's "Increase Koreans" project, aimed at increasing the birth rate and persuading more women to carry their pregnancies to term. (GEE, How's that working? Uh, not too well it seems!!!)
Korean pro-life groups have warned that legalizing early-term abortion will only increase the number of abortions.
 One group, Pro-Life Doctors, has been formed to encourage women to carry their pregnancies to birth and to encourage doctors to abandon the practice of abortion. The organization runs a hotline to report practitioners of illegal abortion to the police.

Korean Obstetrician STOPS Performing Abortions

“For nearly two decades, obstetrician Shim Sang-duk aborted as many babies as he delivered -- on average, one a day, month after month. "Over time, I became emotionless," the physician said. "I came to see the results of my work as just a chunk of blood. During the operation, I felt the same as though I was treating scars or curing diseases." Shim, 42, eventually came to despise himself, despite the money he earned from the procedures. So, two months ago, he founded an activist group of physicians who refuse to perform abortions and advocate prosecution for doctors who continue to do so. The group's stand has brought a tidal wave of criticism from the Korean Assn. of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which represents more than 4,000 physicians in this country where abortions, although technically illegal, are so prevalent it has been tagged as "the Abortion Republic."
But Shim's campaign has triggered a rare public debate on abortion. Lawmakers now call for tougher enforcement of existing laws, and are asking parents to reassess the cultural value of childbirth. Beginning in the 1970s, officials advocated fewer births as a way to fuel economic productivity. The policy was perhaps too successful: Birthrates in South Korea plummeted. A decade ago, officials reversed their stand, calling for residents to have more babies. Yet the declining fertility trend has proved difficult to reverse. The country's birthrate is now among the lowest worldwide, with just 1.19 live births per woman. Meanwhile, abortion rates have kept their pace, many say.
For years, Shim rarely, if ever, even used the word "abortion." Rather, he said, he sought to "erase" or "prevent" the fetus. "I bought into the government's argument that it was OK to do this," he said. "It was good for the country. It boosted the economy." Still, Shim was often baffled by his patients' behavior: After receiving their abortions, he said, most women cried. "Many patients cry when they give birth," he said, "but these were a different kind of tears."

“This year, however, the Korean government has sworn to resolve the ever decreasing birthrate and one way of doing this is to get tough on abortions.  But have abortions disappeared in South Korea? Apparently not: According to the AP article, a Mrs. Kim became pregnant with her third child and, already struggling to get by, decided to terminate the pregnancy.

It took Mrs. Kim 10 tries to find a doctor willing to perform an abortion, and he’s demanding nearly $1,000 in cash. To scrape together the money, the six-weeks pregnant woman took a second job cleaning an office building overnight for a few weeks.
“I can barely afford to have an abortion. How can I afford to raise and put a kid through college?” the 31-year-old secretary said, dunking a rag into a bucket of water.
As she sacrifices sleep to save up for her abortion, Mrs. Kim says she is trying to safeguard her family’s well-being by terminating the pregnancy.
“Our current income is just enough to feed four and educate the two,” she said. “Activists and policymakers can debate all they want, but I’m the one sweeping floors to kill my baby.”

Apparently some of the doctors she had approached were similar to these doctors we discussed in an earlier thread:  Dr. Choi Anna and Shim Sang-duk who basically sold their souls for $340 dollars performing abortions but later had a change of heart.  It is also interesting to note that Mrs. Kim’s abortion was for $1,000 dollars, which, even though it is nearly three times what Drs. Choi and Shim charged, it is still cheaper than the going price.  According to this AFP article (March 9, 2010):

Byun Hea-Joung, a counsellor and professor at Sogang University, said the cost of an abortion had risen from 300,000 won (264 dollars) to three million won and would continue to increase.

The KWB notes: This Abortion cost increase happened throughout the year of 2010, with up to TEN TIMES at major hospitals, as the government continued to try to INCREASE birthrate numbers. We are waiting to see what effect this had on the year’s numbers of LIVE Births to Unwed Mothers Stats, for instance. The KWB thinks the numbers of LIVE BIRTHS to Unwed Mothers will significantly INCREASE for the year. (Again, based on Korean Women’s Development Institute’s reports 2 out of 3 will be Given up for Adoption.)
Getting back to the Ratio figures. IF the numbers given by OBGYNs of 1.5 million or 4,000 PER DAY- what are the percentages then, “Somebody” help me with the math!

 450,000 BIRTHS and 1,500,000 ABORTIONS

Totals = 1,950,000 Pregnancies/Year

450,000/1,950,000 = 23%

1,500,000/1,950,000 = 77%

Hmm, WELL check my numbers:

 A Korean “FETUS” has approximately ONE in FOUR or

23% chance to LIVE outside the WOMB.

OR

Sadly, a 77% CHANCE of the decision,

 “TERMINATE WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE.”

THREE TIMES more “Chances” to be Aborted, is that Right? Double check me, now, Please.

DANDONG, China—Beijing on Friday lodged its first official protest of a joint U.S.-South Korean military exercise planned for Sunday, even as the aircraft carrier USS George Washington steamed toward the region.
North Korea also responded angrily. "The situation on the Korean peninsula is inching closer to the brink of war," the state controlled Korean Central News Agency responded Friday to the maneuvers, which are set to take place in the Yellow Sea between the Koreas and northeastern China.
The strong talk was the latest fallout from North Korea's hour-long artillery attack of a South Korean island on Tuesday that killed four people. The next day, the U.S. and South Korea said planned joint exercises would go ahead over the weekend, heightening fears in some quarters that already-tense relations between North and South Korea—and their respective international protectors, China and the U.S.—could be heading for a showdown.
Yet China's outwardly defiant response belies a more delicate political reality: Beijing's continued support of North Korea's erratic, martial regime is beginning to extract real costs. China's statement Friday included a face-saving formulation that appeared to open the door for a scenario China has long sought to avert—a U.S. aircraft carrier, a potent symbol of U.S. military might, plying the edge of Chinese waters.
The KWB notes: The rest of the article explains that China back in July of this year protested against a US Carrier (same one that WILL not take part, the USS George Washington with it’s task force) in ANY part of the Yellow Sea. Korean’s call it their West Sea. By clarifying that as long as the task force stayed away from the 200 Nautical miles Exclusive Economic Zone limits it would be okay. Off the SOUTHWEST COAST of Korea is outside of this limit, giving both China and the US/South Korea wiggle room that also tells North Korea that China is giving tacit approval for the exercises.
What this means is we can relax. NK will probably do ‘saber rattling’ (making a lot of noise) fire a few shells but nothing like last week. WSJ also points out that China’s Pres. Hu Jintao has a trip to Washington in January to meet with Pres. Obama. So a compromise that saves their face and does not prevent but rather sets guidelines are very reassuring.

It is interesting to see the old Korea in these photos before the Japanese Annexation started in 1910 until Liberation in 1945. This is not meant to represent all that Korea was at that time, but rather gives us a glimpse at how far Korea has come since then. Some have claimed that Korea was ‘helped’ by the occupation but this comes mainly from conservative Japanese politicians who try to make this justification for their imperial attempts in Asia.
Despite the years under foreign rule and the war between the communist North and the Democratic South, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) has transformed into the 14th largest country based on GDP. Meanwhile, Communist run DPRK (North Korea) remains mired in poverty and hunger even now, demanding more food aid in trade for brief family reunions and continuing denials of sinking the ROKS Cheonan, a patrol ship that was sunk with lose of 46 sailors.
    Yet, some very badly informed and misguided KAD’s continue to claim that US and UN troops presence in the South are “Occupation” forces. Don’t they understand that the two Liberal Presidents of ROK could have easily asked the US and UN troops to LEAVE.

Are they ignoring FACTS that 22 UN countries have treaties still in place to send MORE troops to protect the sovereignty of the democratic Southern part of the peninsular if the Commie Jackasses attack again? Yet they use loosely the terms ‘Occupation forces’ and “Imperial” when referring to United States Armed Forces, serving at the invitation of the democratically elected government. Even President Roh Moo Hyun, who claimed that he would not ‘kow-tow’ to the US, DID NOT ASK them to leave. HELLO, US troops are here to protect the interests of the country.
Do terrible things happen? Has there been some incidents with violence by individual US Troops? YES, and there has been Korean women who fell in love and married US and UN troops. (Warning: extreme SARCASM coming)-

The REAL thing that bothers me is that one out of three young South Koreans (they call under 45) will BELIEVE this or already BLAME the USA for 'sinking the Cheonan'. The opposition parties have put out online lies and fabrications, called into question scientific and investigative facts and the results of an International Team of Maritime experts in explosives, investigation, and all that. But don't confuse the Socialist/Communist sympathizers in the South with such information.

Oh, no, they still believe that the two young middle school students in 2002 were "murdered" by US troops, and a recently released film on the No Gun Ri incident is based on the Associated Press's faulty Pulitzer Prize award. The joint commission to investigate the allegations have shown that the main "witnesses" US soldiers who claimed they were "ordered to kill 'em all" WHERE PROVEN TO BE LIES. THEY WERE NOT EVEN THERE ON THE DAY OF THE INCIDENT. US News magazine first exposed that AP reporters KNEW that key witnesses were found to have NOT been with the unit on that day, the main person Edward Daily did not join the unit until SEVEN months later.

Actor Lee BeomSoo Donates to Multicultural Centers

Actor Lee Beom-soo, who married interpreter Lee Yoon-jin on May 22, donated the entire gift money from the wedding to the Central Office for Multicultural Family Support Centers last month.
The agency, which is under the Ministry of Gender Equality & Family, assists 159 multicultural family support centers nationwide.

The KWB applauds his efforts to help and give publicity to the 170,000 Multicultural families that ARE trying to make it. Over 103,000 children of Mixed-Blood or HoNurAh are now registered by the Ministry. NOT ALL Multicultural families end up bad, but there needs to be more guidelines to avoid such things as THIS:

Mentally Ill man kills new Vietnamese wife
A Busan man (age 57) with a history of mental illness fatally stabbed his Vietnamese wife eight days after she arrived in Korea, prompting the government to plan measures that would prevent mentally ill men from going abroad to seek wives…
Police are investigating whether the matchmaking company that introduced Kim to the Vietnamese woman screened candidates for mental illness, as they found Kim received treatment in a mental hospital 57 times in the last eight years.

Yes, do they screen candidates? NO, hey maybe a good idea to also stop the 37 year age difference as well? WTH, THIS is what goes on in this country. HOW can “authorities” be thinking? About 10% to 15% or these marriage by pick and choose are no more than SEX tours for young brides. International couples must/should be regulated to stop obvious abuse.
The ten percent of marriage that DO fail also leave behind Mixed-blood children and some of them are abandoned. Wife beating, prejudice from husband’s family, language difficulties, social acceptance, are just some of the problems. The many Centers for Multicultural Families are helping the great majority. What must be done is COMMON SENSE, like stopping “instant marriages”.
The KWB is trying to make contact with the Ministry of Gender Equality & Family, and the Multicultural Support Centers to get more direct information. The children of these marriages are changing the demographics of the FORMERLY HOMEOGENOUS Rep. of Korea.

In this life we will always face conflict, though we can deal with issues as rationally and peacefully as ossible, sometimes you have to face violence with violence. I have never been good at “turning the other check” unfortunately. Who ever you are try to consider for a short time, the conditions before, during, and after the outbreak of war.
We must learn from the past, if possibly to prevent war again, but most of all we must be ready to fight, kill, even die for our freedom. Some have done that…in order for the many to enjoy freedom. So many died during the war, and the suffering of separation still haunts us. Those of you who were Adopted From or even IN Korea were affected by the events of post World War 2 and the Korean War. We exist in a “state of war” to this day, and we must maintain readiness.

Most of our readers live in the country whose official name in English is the ``Republic of Korea.'' But how does that name sound in Korean? And how did this name come into being in the first place?
To start with, the official Korean name of the ROK consists of four syllables, Dae Han-Min Guk. Each syllable might be seen as a separate word, or rather a separate root, and all these syllables-words are of Chinese origin.

Patriotism? Dae Han Min Guk!

It is heard throughout the land of the morning calm, “Dae Han Min Guk” which means literally “The Greater Korea” somewhat like “Great Britain” meant before they changed it to United Kingdom. You might not know it but school children are taught that they are living in the “Great Korea” not just the “Republic of Korea”, known to most outsiders as SOUTH KOREA. Confused? Basically the maps of school children show NO DMZ on the map.
The idea of the country being ONE GREATER KOREA is stressed as reality- never mind the, umm, most heavily mined and defended border in the world. The reality of life is ignored, and during the past two Liberal Socialistic governments the solid blue flag of hope was this:

We watched as tears streamed down the face of Japan-born striker Jong Tae-se as he stood with his North Korean teammates listening to their national anthem being played at the World Cup for the first time in 44 years. The tears warmed many hearts and elicited a variety of interpretations of their meaning…
But my heart turned heavy watching this young athlete let tears flow as he gazed at his country’s flag, undoubtedly reflecting on the harsh realities of North Korea...I felt both sympathy and fear for the young man.
And suddenly I started to wonder if our young people would be a match for such strong-minded counterparts from North Korea.

The thousands of young people at Seoul Plaza shouting their hearts out for our team at the World Cup must be driven there by a fervid love for their country and fellow countrymen. They cannot be a wholly different group from those cynical about the Cheonan report. There are two types of patriotism - an easy, self-serving one, and a difficult and sacrificing one.

If I want to defend my own country, some form of sacrifice is inevitable. Bearing loyalty to one’s country regardless of the sacrifice is the difficult kind of patriotism.

Chanting “Daehanminguk!” in a festive mood while rejecting any hardship and obligation to defend the country would be the easy brand of patriotism.

The Navy is suffering from a considerable drop in the number of applicants for enlistment, following the sinking of a warship that took the lives of 46 sailors in March, a lawmaker said Sunday.

Rep. Shin Hak-yong of the main opposition Democratic Party said the number of applicants has decreased by half over the past few months in the aftermath of the Cheonan sinking by a North Korean torpedo in the West Sea.





The lawmaker said during the January-March period, the Navy saw 7,974 prospective seamen apply for 2,787 vacancies, or an average of about 2.87 people for each opening for enlisted servicemen…Rep. Shin said. "The military should urgently address the growing tendency to avoid joining the Navy."

Korean School Children Ignorant of Korean War

According to a recent survey by a local monthly magazine, one in every five childrenoccurred between Korea and Japan. described the war as one that

More than 40 percent said that 38th parallel was the borderline between the two Koreas, said the survey of 3,660 elementary school students from grade three to six, conducted by Monthly JoongAng.

North Korean Women Sailors ARE NOT suffering from fear or worry of dying for their country. Only need to look at the skinny, hungry soldiers, who are more than motivated to destroy the capitalistic Southerners.

The women seem to be much better fed than the men.

History Loses Place in School Curriculum
A survey by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security last year found that 56.6 percent of people in their 20s didn't know what year the Korean War broke out. (uh, 1950-53)








These "embarrassing" survey results may stem from education policies consistently de-emphasizing national history, especially in high school.

Korean mothers may drive up to fetch their darlings from harms way. Fears and tensions are mounting, just what the Communist North wants. Rumors on the internet are creating some panic, it makes the KWB smile. Fear can be a good thing but a few 'shots across the bow' would REALLY get the blood flowing in many young people. No, we don't WANT the North to attack...but a few shells across the border would perhaps destroy the MYTH that Socialists Pinkos believe. Unity my A.S.S.

In the years of being a KADLinK (Korean ADoptee Living in Korea) the Korean War Baby has always tried to instill pride in his Korean male students to be willing to serve in their country’s armed forces. Many Korean young men look at the mandatory military service as not necessary, a waste of time, a horrible break during their university studies, etc. Most of the men would much rather NOT bother, after all, the North is our own blood the younger mislead fools think. Liberals whine and whing about the Conservatives destroying the Sunshine Policy that was BOUGHT outright by former leaders. The Sun doesn't shine 'down there' and all the South got was "Ddong Shimmed" by their 'brothers' in the Commie North.

The country shouts DaeHanMinGook but has barely honored the death of 46 Sailors. Instead young men are RUNNING for the exits, Korean mothers probably worried sick that their little baby boys will serve in the Korean Navy and die. What hypocrisy as the masses easily 'shout in the streets but don't really support' or even attend football games. Only the World Cup gets out the Red Devils and produce "Patriotic fever". The slaughtered sailors are mostly forgotten, oh well, Korean mothers crying out " I don't want MY SON to die for his country". WHAT A DISGRACE!!!

Few indeed think of service as a patriotic thing to do. Most of his own male students have at least been exposed to the truth of what REALLY happened after the WW2 and how the country was divided. With almost one out of three teachers belonging to (Socialist Liberal) Teachers’ Union recent surveys show that many Koreans don’t even know the YEAR the Korean War started. (June 25 is remembered but they don’t put the year, 1950).

God help us if the North Korean war machine starts another incident and it escalates into full blown war. Will USA really be able to hold back the tide with only AIR POWER? Will Tactical NUKES be needed to save Seoul? Will there be time to even decide? Be ready if the shit hits the fan.

Pray for Peace, be prepared for War.
