THIS THING OF OURS-ADOPTION

THE KOREAN WAR BABY

My name is Don Gordon BELL and I am one of the earliest of the first generation of KAD's (Korean ADoptees). The Korean War had been settled by Armistice three years before I left war-torn Seoul, Korea, on May 21, 1956. It was the first plane of twelve 'war babies' processed thru the Harry Holt Adoption Program. Read more of MY STORY on My Pages.
I grew up in a typical middle-class family of English-Scottish roots in greater Los Angeles, Ca, USA. Memories faded, Korean language was 'lost' and I did not know anything about the country of my birth until I met Korean Marines in Vietnam while serving with the US Marines. It was my first exposure to real Korean people. I was not completely aware of how prejudiced most Koreans thought towards a Half-Breed like me. I learned what "Tuigi" meant, a Korean word for a "Child of a Foreign devil". Oh, wonderful.

All my life I always had to answer the question: "What ARE you?" and I simply would tell 'my story'. It was not a big deal for me, for my Adoptive Parents had taught me that being an American meant that WE were from many countries. I never 'wished to be White' and just learned to stand up for my own identity. MY Identity was as an American, with mixed heritage. I did not know what being "Korean" meant but often wondered about my roots, and what my birth father's ethnicity. Mexican, Native Americans, and Spanish people would tell me that I had their 'genes' for sure. Little did I know they were right!

After college, I traveled to Manila and for ten years I lived in the Philippines. I was excepted as a 'mestizo' and fit into the former Spanish colony. I was a B-movie Character Actor,
working on international and local films, enjoying a 'crazy and wild' abandonment. Then a life changing experience gave me faith in a personal Higher Being. After walking away from the film business, I lived back in the USA, not sure of my direction in life finding work in construction, finish carpentry, door hanging, and many other jobs I'd like to forget.

In 1991, at 38, I attended a Holt Heritage Camp that was a great experience and really began my own journey of Adoption Identity search. I had never thought much of my Korean culture, though I always felt proud of being "HALF-Korean" and "half-Something".

In 1994 I came back to Seoul, Korea, with my church Vineyard Christian Fellowship, and was invited to stay with a church in East Seoul, for one year. I have lived here since late 1995- re-discovering my "Korean-ness", teaching English and telling my Adoption Story to thousands of Korean students of all ages, helping their understanding of Korean Adoptees. It is one of the issues that Korea is now facing, even for its own secretly adopted children, those who were adopted IN-Country by Koreans who desired a family but due to problems with Infertility secretly adopt.

I was a charter member in 1997 (first dozen members) of GOA'L (Global Overseas Adoptees' Link, founded by Ami Nafzger) and continue to be involved with the complex issues of This Thing of Ours-Adoption. Thousands of KADs have visited Korea over the years, searching for their culture and Some search for birth family. Seventy-five thousand have come, yet only 2,400 plus have found Reunion with Birth family, often with varying results. There are many complexities, many don't want to search concerned about offending their Adoptive Families. Each KAD must decide what they want to do, when to do it, etc.

At 67, I am still 'working thru' my Adoption Identity. Each of YOU need to 'work through' your own understanding and hopefully find forgiveness and healing. Read many different accounts and compare before coming to conclusions. I hope that you will learn what IS happening NOW, in the land of your birth, the Rep. of Korea (South Korea). (See Report Links).

Times are changing, the reasons for 'relinquishment/given up for adoption' have shifted, but there continues to be a need for a multi-tiered approach and understanding of Adoption issues. Slowly, attitudes of Korean society ARE changing for the better. But, the majority continue to feel embarrassment and shame. Thus, Adoption is still shrouded in secrecy even for those who are adopted In-country . There ARE positive signs and movements of NGO's and KAD groups are advocating for the Unwed Mothers. However, two-thirds of pregnant women each year, continue to give up their babies for adoption. One out of four are sent overseas, YET three are secretly adopted in-country. The Myth that "Koreans don't adopt" is false, but they need to open up and hopefully change their shame to pride.

This blog is for EVERYONE, whether you are an Adoptee, Adoptive Family, Birth Family or involved in Adoption in ANY way as a professional, social worker, official, etc, from Korea or the world. We examine the complex issues and personal journeys that we, domestic and overseas adoptees, have to face and sort out in This Thing of Ours-Adoption. (Use the Search function to check for Posts on various topics, TransRacial, Tran-Cultural, Multi-Cultural families, Domestic, Civil Code Law Adoptions, InterCountry Adoption, etc.)

I personally have come to a compromised, nuanced position on this thing of ours-adoption. I advocate a Multi-tiered Plan that tries to be balanced, realistic, fair to all.

UPDATE: Living in the Philippines since 2010, at first teaching students from several countries as an Online Tutor, based in Makati, Metro Manila. I was working on a Digital Library for Online Tutoring or ELearning; developing an agritourism farm; and Overseas Retirement Care for foreigners needing 24/7 health care.

Then some 18 months ago, in July of 2012 I met with Andrew Leavold, a crazy film obsessed Aussie who helped "pull me back into film making".

WHEW! Lot on my plate. I have also been learning much about the Filipino society's very different viewpoints on unwed motherhood and adoption.

As of Sept. 2012, I worked on an Indie Film, "Baybayin, the Palawan Script", directed by Auraeus Solito, and international award winning Filipino director. I had a role in the film and explored my hobby as a STILLS Photographer. Currently I have quit all teaching, co-writing on an international film that will be done in 3D and CGI effects. I am back in the film-making business and I love it. I have continued to act in Independent and international films and in many projects worked as Stills/Bts Photographer. I cover film festivals, events, and continue to try to improve my Game. Semi-retired but love to keep active, now exploring mirrorless 4K cameras but still a Canon Guy.

Anti-Abortion Campaign Ignores Doctors' Plight

Anti-Abortion Campaign Ignores Doctors' Plight

By Park Si-soo
Staff Reporter

Wrestling with a chronically low birth rate, the government has begun to tighten its control on illegal abortions. A set of initiatives includes better services for pregnant women and tougher crackdowns on offenders, particularly doctors. A 38-year-old obstetrician recently closed her clinic in Seoul due to snowballing debts. Her consistent refusal to conduct illegal abortions for the past two years was mainly responsible for the closure, she explained.

When she opened the clinic in 2007, she didn't expect her no-abortion policy to affect the bottom line as much as it did.

"Frankly, abortions are very profitable," she said. "Doctors can earn hundreds of dollars, mostly in cash, in one or two hours by conducting an illegal abortion, while other, legal treatments for pregnant women take longer, but are less profitable. That's why many obstetricians running private clinics conduct the illegal act despite the risk of being punished."
According to a study by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2005, a total of 342,433 abortions were conducted nationwide, while 435,031 babies were born in the same year.

But activists call these numbers the tip of the iceberg, estimating that the actual number is around 1.5 to 2 million each year.
Despite the penalties, another study in 2005 found that nearly 80 percent of clinics here conducted abortions illegally.

"Abortions are a great temptation to profit-conscious doctors," said Choi Ahn-na, a spokesperson for a group of obstetricians against abortion. "This is apparently an act against morality as a medical doctor but that's the reality."

More than 680 members of Choi's group recently joined the campaign, stressing doctors' original duty of protecting human life and their desire to help Korea move away from what they called its long-standing stigma as a "paradise of abortions."

Again, this is from Dec. 2, 2009. We now know that recently clinics have raised their prices from 300,000 Won ($300 dollars approx.) to 1,000,000 won ($1,000 dollars approx.) and some large hospital are charging "legal coverage" for THE PROCEDURE at 2,000,000 WON!

The Korean War Baby wonders where is the government's collective MIND? Why do they allow such "scalping"?

Imagine those who are poor, faced with double and triple the cost to get a PROCEDURE that actually costs about $50 dollars and a doctors visit.

Shocking? Taking advantage of the weak and poor?Raising the cost from 300% to 600%! Profiteering, out right robbery, and NO one SEES this?
"I see nothing, don't see a thing!!"
Here are the Inconvenient Truths

For Emergency Contraception up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex (no Birth Control or Condoms) Plan B is also called the Morning After Pill. Used to get rid of Unintended Pregnancy is Only 20-70 dollars. Available in Korea only after a Doctor's visit at clinics everywhere and a prescription easily gotten even by foreign guests, because no method of birth control is fool proof 100% :

"Norlevo is a one step tablet that contains the active ingredient levonorgestrel, which is a synthetic derivative of the naturally occurring female sex hormone, progesterone.

It is not fully understood how this medicine prevents pregnancy. It is thought to work by preventing ovulation and fertilisation and also by altering the lining of the womb, depending on which stage of the menstrual cycle the woman is at.
Levonorgestrel is also thought to alter the lining of the womb, preventing it from being prepared for a fertilised egg. This means that if an egg is released from the ovaries and is fertilised, it cannot implant into the womb and therefore pregnancy is avoided.

The whole process from fertilisation to implantation in the womb can take up to three days, so the morning after pill can only stop a pregnancy for up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. The sooner it is taken after unprotected sex, the more effective it will be.
"

If one could NOT get to a clinic in 3-5 days then the next step is also available:

Abortion Pill

Planned Parenthood.org Abortion Pill

The abortion pill is a medicine that ends an early pregnancy. In general, it can be used up to 63 days — 9 weeks — after the first day of a woman's last period. Women who need an abortion and are more than 9 weeks pregnant can have an in-clinic abortion.
The name for "the abortion pill" is mifepristone. It was called RU-486 when it was being developed in France. Yes, it can be ordered here in Korea.

What Are the Kinds of In-Clinic Abortion?
In-clinic-abortion-procedures

There is more than one kind of in-clinic abortion procedure. The most common is called aspiration. It is also known as vacuum aspiration. Aspiration is usually used up to 16 weeks after a woman’s last period.
D&E — dilation and evacuation — is another kind of in-clinic abortion. D&E is usually performed later than 16 weeks after a woman's last period.

The Korean War Baby predicted last year Dec. 21 gender-imbalance-to-reach-crisis-point
"The KWB notes that “the proper age for marriage” has gone up and poor single women are being blamed for few births. Many factors are indeed involved causing the government’s policies to reverse course. Watch for ‘drastic measures’ to be announced soon by the Korean authorities! Laws must be made to Force women to get married and have more babies! Maybe enforcing laws on abortion might help? The KWB just shakes his head in dismay!"
THERE IT IS!! The Government Policy will definitely produce more Babies to be born this year...How many will be Kept by the Mothers? How many will be Given up for CIVIL, Domestic, then InterCountry Adoptions? The KWB predicts the numbers will go up at least 30% so based on 2007 MOHWFA figures of 7774 babies born alive with Unwed Mothers, Hmmm, the numbers for 2010 might reach or go over 10,000 by the end of the year.
Maybe the Government might move to provide more facilities and support for both Unwed mothers and Single divorced mothers. Yes, birthrate should go up with those who are too poor and cannot afford the SOARING PRICES.

The Associated Press: SKorean women caught in abortion limbo

The Associated Press: SKorean women caught in abortion limbo
By Park Si-soo
Staff Reporter
An association representing thousands of obstetricians running their own clinics recently issued a statement backing the calls by pro-women rights activists that pregnant women have the exclusive right to determine whether to have an abortion.

This has fueled the ongoing debate in the medical sector over the issue, which was ignited last month after a pro-life doctors' group filed a criminal complaint against their peers at hospitals over illegal terminations.
"It's the exclusive right of women to decide whether to have a baby or to have an abortion," the Korea Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said in the statement. It stressed it's undesirable to put pressure on pregnant women to deliver babies with the social atmosphere and infrastructure for childcare remaining rudimentary.

"We have had no choice but to help pregnant women abort their fetus at our own risk of being punished because it's for the sake of women's health. But we are viewed as a sort of criminal in the media and society," it said.

Dr. Ahn Hyun-ok, secretary general of the association, told The Korea Times that the current policy on abortion should be ultimately amended in such a way as to empower pregnant women to decide whether or not to have the procedure.
Well, there you have it, since 1973 when laws permitted abortions for medical illness affecting the fetus, threatening the health of the woman, pregnancy due to rape or incest, and birth defects, all gave a "Loophole" for so called legal abortions. See the Law does not recognize the right of a woman to have Pro-Choice per se. But the practice was done, with a wink and a nod, with only two known cases brought to court.

Rather than say the truth even the doctors use the term "sake of women's health", PLEASE! Doctor, tell it like it is! It is so a woman can "have the procedure" to "terminate an unwanted Pregnancy". Let's be real here. The current policy is however threatened by the Pro-Life doctors with repercussions already affecting the women seeking the procedure.
Anti-Abortion Policy-03-02-2010
Fundamental Remedy
Fundamental Remedy Needed to Reduce Fetal Homicide
Korea's birthrate is almost the lowest in the world, while its proportion of abortion by fertile women is nearly the highest. The government's policy package to prevent illegal artificial abortions announced Monday shows its agony to resolve the seemingly contrasting but actually common problems ― and how difficult the task would be.

The package calls for, among other things, toughening penalties for obstetricians performing illegal abortions and increasing subsidies for young single parents.

Unlike its title, however, the ``comprehensive" measures are at best ostensible and fragmentary steps, which cannot alter the underlying environment where intentional miscarriage of fetuses is still better than delivering and raising babies, especially for unwed mothers. How many youngsters, for instance, would opt to become single parents lured by the monthly subsidy of 100,000 won until they become 24?

At its worst, the administrative crackdown on abortion doctors will be costlier and more dangerous, forcing women with unwanted pregnancy to go abroad if they are rich, and to unlicensed practitioners if they are poor, risking greater health hazards.

What the nation should tackle first in this regard is to rectify the glaring disparity between a too strict legal system and actual practices ― or between ideals and reality. The Mother and Child Health Law permits abortions in only five cases, including rape, incest, hereditary disorders and when the mother's health is in serious danger, resulting in the fact that less than 5 percent of about 350,000 abortions a year are legal.

(Korean Pro-Life Doctors claim according to their figures the abortion numbers are 4,000 per DAY, totally 1.46 million per year because of the prescriptions used.)

Above all, the time has long passed for Koreans to change their millennia-old bias against single mothers with ``fatherless child," which, when coupled with their excessive adherence to blood ties, also brought about the ignoble title of ``baby exporter" on Korea even at a time when this country has become the world's 14th largest economy.

Once again silly people, It IS NOT ABOUT THE ECONOMY-It’s the language of Blood, Blood ties are still important and adoption is considered SHAMEFUL. The recent killer of a 13 year old girl was ADOPTED!! The stories that will bring up, worse than the movie “Adopted” caused quite a stir over here.

Also required would be a change in the time-old patriarchal environment that discriminates against women, single or married, with or without children.

More realistically, any government policy to reduce abortions and raise the birthrate must start with a drastic increase in financial support for women with children, not just because it is helpful for economic growth but because it makes the Korean society more worthwhile to live in.

Here here! This writer seems to get it! But the government policy has already caused problems with women TURNED away from high class hospitals, and the stinking clinics have more than tripled fees, from $300 dollars up to $1,000 dollars and up to $2,000 just because of the sudden policy to increase BIRTH RATE.

South Korean Women caught in Limbo
SEOUL, South Korea — Having a third child wasn't in Mrs. Kim's plans. She and her husband are already struggling to get by.
But getting an abortion, once so routine here that South Korea was known as "Abortion Republic," is no longer easy. In recent weeks, the government has begun enforcing a long-ignored ban on the procedure for the first time.

It took Mrs. Kim 10 tries to find a doctor willing to perform an abortion, and he's demanding nearly $1,000 in cash. South Korea outlawed abortion in 1953 with exceptions for rape, incest or severe genetic disorders, or threat to a mother’s health. Yet authorities turned a blind eye for decades, as the nation sought to tame population growth. BEFORE for $300, women could get an abortion at almost any OB-GYN clinic. These doctors make more by KILLING than delivering.  "For the love of Money"...the root of all evil.

That changed earlier this year, a shift that pro-choice activists say was motivated by the country's plunging birthrate. The Ministry of Health and Welfare even announced it would set up a hot line for citizens to report on law-breaking doctors or pregnant women.
I am not making this up. I TOLD YOU SO that Korea suddenly does something, like a “hot line for citizens to report” and MAKE MONEY by doing so. Don’t Believe me? They do it all the time for traffic violations, photographers fought each other for best locations with 50% of the fine going into every photo of cars making illegal U-turns. When it got too ugly they stopped it, or lost too much money. Think they put up traffic cameras instead.
Last month, a woman gave birth and suffocated her newborn to death in a motel room, Seoul police said. "In the current social mood against abortions, I knew that I could get arrested trying to get one, but also that I couldn't afford one anyway because prices have risen so much," the woman said, according to a police statement.
The procedure was seen for years as a way to help curb high fertility rates, sociologist Cho Byong-hee said.
"The government aggressively propagated the notion that having fewer kids would lead to prosperity, without any public debates or discussions over the ethics of abortion," said Cho, a professor at Seoul National University.
Birth control is still a taboo in South Korea, a society shaped by a Confucian heritage that prizes chastity. Lack of education on birth control means too many unplanned pregnancies, said women's rights activist Kim Doo-na.
The stigma of being a single mother in a society that treats them as outcasts pushes many to abortion when they do fall pregnant, she said.
Concerned about the low birthrate, President Lee Myung-bak's administration set up a task force in November to encourage childbirth, enacting tax breaks, subsidies for medical fees and childrearing expenses and steps to improve childcare.
The government also made clear the ban on abortion would be strictly enforced, though denying any connection to the effort to raise the birthrate.
As she sacrifices sleep to save up for her abortion, Mrs. Kim says she is trying to safeguard her family's well-being by terminating the pregnancy.
"Our current income is just enough to feed four and educate the two," she said. "Activists and policymakers can debate all they want, but I'm the one sweeping floors to kill my baby."
Jer 9:1  Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

A what? Cliff? Oh...Cleft, A CLEFT LIP? OMG

"Satan sent you to drive me crazy, that right Private? I CANNOT BELIEVE What you JUST SAID!!!"

"A what? Cliff? No...Cleft, a CLEFT LIP? OMG!"

The KWB and his 1st wife K. were meeting with a Korean woman who had been married for ten years but was 'barren' or infertile. Or so they thought, as the JipSa Nim (Deaconess in an Evangelical church) told us the wrong translation, she actually just had no children but had become pregnant several times. After carefully backtracking and careful questioning, it became understood that the woman's last pregnancy had been 'terminated' because of a MRI scan that showed that the baby had a Cleft Lip.

His wife was stunned, having worked in a hospital she knew that this was a correctable and fairly common procedure that was done requiring several operations depending on the severity of the condition. They asked many more questions and learned Yes, it was a minor Cleft lip condition and could be corrected by two operations but everyone in the husband's family insisted to 'get rid of it' or Bari Da 다리다. "IT" was too shameful to have to deal with and everyone in the large church would know about it. So at 28 weeks into her pregnancy with a 'boy baby', this woman tearfully told them that she had had Another 'operation'.

"ANOTHER operation? She had another one before?" The 1st wife was now asking the questions rapid-fire through the Jipsa Nim. "How many "Operations did you have?" The Jipsa Nim apparently already knew and told us "Oh, she's had five, Anio? Six, this was her sixth...it was boy baby. Pastor agreed she should do it." The previous 5 were girls and the family of the husband wanted a boy first. This is an unusual case but not entirely unknown as the sex ratio of male to females in some rural areas reached 130 males to 100 females. This is why over 160,000 mixed-racial or Multi-cultural marriages have produced 103,000 mixed-blood children!)

Now 1st wife was speechless and the KWB had to ask the Jipsa Nim to repeat again about the pastor. The pastor had told the couple that it "It's okay, because it would be too shameful and embarrassing to give birth to such a baby."

'such a baby'!! Do you see why the KWB weeps tears of anger and Rages against injustice? This is one of the reasons his first wife could not stay in Korea anymore. Go look at the Overseas Adoptees Korea here.
You will find the stats on children with cleft lips under Disabilities
언청이 means cleft lips. From 1961 to 2005 there were (2,005) children with CLEFT LIPS (the government keeps excellent records, eh), sent away from the land of their birth for ICA or Overseas adoption. Because every year only 3 % take by adoption those "disabled" souls.

OH, THEY WERE KIDNAPPED/Laundered for profit!!! YEAH right! NOT TRUE!! BOGUS!!!
Perhaps we could get some of these children, (who according to a few "Non-Humans-사람아니야",  should have been terminated with extreme prejudice) to speak about their lives?
The KWB is sending emails to these 'victims of child laundering/kidnapping???' and will post reply to his query, "Gee, kid, do you wish you had been aborted? You know, instead of being sold to 'rich white Adopters".

Can I get a Hell, NO!?!

Not to say "there are no cases of this horror" because IT DOES happen. YES, kidnapping and laundering by lowlife scum who REALLY do profit from sex trade, child labor, selling boys and girls IN China, and many other countries has and will happen. That is the purpose of the Hague Conventions on Adoption/Child Protection to regulate these things properly. But being given away by grandparents is not the same as kidnapping, is it? One famous adoptee claims that she was 'kidnapped' for adoption but fails to mention it was her Father's Mother (Paternal grandmother) who sent her secretly away because she disapproved of her son's marriage) and then claimed the two children were "kidnapped" on a police report. Instead they were given to a JeongMae (Mid-wife who took them to another city and claimed they had been 'found'). Procedures must be in place to prevent this from being attempted again. With the advent of the Internet and identification, cross referencing with every police station in the country this should NOT be able to take place. BUT it has in the past, IN A FEW CASES. COME on give me the facts!!! Prove your case.

It is the tactic of "Some" to apply the "all" label to these matters. Such illogical statements defy  sensible minds, and puts 'poop in the soup'.

Some friends have told the Korean War Baby that he should NOT talk about the big "A" word. NO, not Adoption, but the other "A" word-ABORTION. But in This Thing of Ours-Adoption, one cannot avoid it, it is the BIG WHITE ELEPHANT in the room, or the 700 lbs Gorilla.

Let it be KNOWN, He shall be quiet NO MORE.

Drums of Shame

Today the KWB attended the Korean Women's Development Institute's Policy Forum, concerning the issues of Unwed Mothers. Dr. Boas and his wife were in attendance, (not sure but perhaps with their Korean daughter by adoption). Of course some of the members of Korean Unwed Mothers Support Network (KUMSN) were also there with their children.

More on the substance of the Forum on next post. It is late in the morning now, but during the forum, as he was looking around at the audience he was struck with how FEW MEN were attending. Less than 10 in the audience and only one Male panel member. The number of Korean women were possibly 85-100 including a dozen Adoptees.
Some Mothers with small infants in backpacks walking around, a couple of older children, very well behaved by the way.

Suddenly a fact came to him, "Fifty percent of Korean women of childbearing age have had at least ONE or More Abortions".
Now stats
can be misleading but the KWB has read this from different sources and personally met dozen of Korean women who admitted that they had even been advised by Pastors and Priests to have abortions. Could be "Every other One" in this room..."WOW, Fifty percent, what deep pain, a collective agony of so many wounded in their hearts and minds."

Then another Stat hit him, possibly "350,000 to 400,000" mothers Plus an equal number of fathers who for the most part ran the other direction, have given up their babies and children for adoption. That's a big city, a city without joy...

On the subway heading home to Ansan City, a 90 minute ride, another Inconvenient Truth popped into his mind, the Daily number of Abortions according to the government is 1,000 but the Korean Foster Care Association figures 3,000 and Pro-Life Doctors say 4,000 based on medications they know are issued. "What are the Real numbers?" He was thinking.

"A Vision of Barrels of Terror"

We were crossing the Han River, when the KWB saw in his 'minds eye' many "55 Galleon" Drums, each one FULL of different stages of Unwanted and Unexpected pregnancies that had been terminated/Aborted. The lid was being put on one filled to the brim with flesh and blood. The number of drums seemed to fill a soccer field, then the number "1,000" was heard, called out by an unseen voice. Then "2,000" was heard...it doubled the drums now stacked two high. Now, "3,000" tripled the stacks, until finally "4,000" was called out. Each time the stacks of drums reached another level.

Then the drums were being loaded into trucks, delivered to different locations. Some to Korean scientists to "Harvest" the blood, broken, torn bodies, some for Beauty products, others to labs for Stem Cell Research. It was a just a daily delivery and it all flashed through my mind in moments, but in agonizing slow motion."

"What was that?!" The whole thing happened before crossing the river to Tonjak Station leaving him speechless and numb, fighting to hold back emotions that threatened to ruin his tough guy image. "It was like a movie, a horror movie."

Doctors Performing Fewer Abortions-OH NO!

Doctors Performing Fewer Abortions

Joong Ahn Daily

February 12, 2010

"Due
to the recent media reports and actions by a group of doctors, many obstetricians in Korea have stopped performing abortions. A clinic in Suwon, Gyeonggi, said that until this year it had performed 50 to 100 abortions a month, making up to 40 million won ($34,572).

Starting this month, however, it stopped altogether.

The nation is locked in a heated controversy over abortion after an obstetricians’
group, Pro-Life Doctors,

reported three hospitals to prosecutors for allegedly conducting illegal abortions.

Abortion under Korean law is illegal except for in special circumstances including pregnancy by rape and for mothers with a contagious disease or mental or physical
illness
. Even so, illegal abortions have long been swept under the rug,
widely performed in hospitals throughout the country
.

Women who want abortions say that they have
been left with no choices. “Is the government saying that I should have
a baby, no questions asked, even though I can’t support myself or don’t
want a baby
?” said a woman in her 20s at a hospital."

The KWB comments: We reported on this development last year as Joong Ahn Daily and Korea Times led the English daily papers to report on these facts. The government worries about the declining birth rate and seeks to encourage more births, even giving 'incentives' and 'bonus' to families that have a 2nd or 3rd child. The Pro-Life Doctors are making their moves after little action by the government. That is par for the course for the government, such as the Dogmeat Restaurant Laws passed immediately after the French expose' during the 1988 Olympics created quite a fuss about Korea. The other issue was the exporting of children for adoption, with many voicing the argument "Korea is no longer poor, why do they send their children abroad" (This will be a separate post as well).

The KWB noted back then, Here and There  that it was only a step away that the government would make it difficult or even outlaw women having abortions. WELL Here we are:

Pro-Life/Pro-Choice/Don't have Sex?/What will happen NOW? YOU just watch...The KWB predicts, no HE Prophesies (He KNOWS) that the numbers of "Babies Born to Unwed Mothers" WILL INCREASE  for the year 2010. All figures will increase, Hopefully the number of Mothers Who Keep Their Babies will stay at roughly 33% but the other 2/3 will go off the charts. SUPPLY of LIVING Korean Babies will go up like a 4th of July Rocket!!

Does this mean the Daily Death Details (the 3D's) might go down? Will women be forced to find illegal and potentially dangerous "Coat Hanger" operations? NOTHING to worry about folks, there are lots of doctors and clinics who will RAISE the PRICE and keep on doing business.

Remember the estimate of the government is ONE Thousand per DAY that are 'terminated' or 'ended', you know the 'UNWANTED Pregnancy' that is just SO inconvenient. The Pro-Life Korean Doctors know the facts, because they have the numbers of doses of medicine and operations, estimate FOUR thousand per DAY.

Oh, and according to the latest figure, 21 Babies were born each day, (7) seven were KEPT by their mothers (Report by Korean Women's Development Institute and KUMSN).

Domestic (official and CIVIL) accounted for (SECRETLY)   (11) eleven, and the LEFT OVER 3 (Three)  were adopted by "RICH WHITE ELITIST LIBERALS WITH WHITE PRIVILEGE" OR so some people say. Uh, this is NOT true as quite a few Korean Adoptees are adopting and the Race of most Adopters is not ALL white. PLUS-The government figures sorta hides the SPECIAL NEEDS children who are adopted because they are UNWANTED by 97% of the Korean people. Oh, and we are not even looking at the Abandoned that go into the Foster Care then Institutions until they grow up, with NO FAMILY.

The number of Unkept, Undomestic/civil adoptions, will likely NOT be able to handle the SURGING numbers of Babies that will not be murdered but BORN ALIVE and THEN WHAT? Domestic (official numbers) adoptions actually dropped last year and Civil adoptions increased since now they can Keep it a dirty secret. Late Discovery Adoptees in Korea will becoming a common shock and awe for many, though they are being careful to MATCH THE BLOOD TYPE of Adoptee and SECRET ADOPTIVE PARENTS. Gotta keep it hidden, don't want the neighbors to know!

This is SUPPLY AND DEMAND pure and simple folks. The Supply continues to outdo the Demand on the home front, as the "Real" Korean people, For whatever reasons they have, simply do not support unwed mothers enough. Will many inconveniently pregnant women be faced with
"Is the government saying that I should have a baby, no questions asked, even though I can’t support myself or don’t want a baby?"

INDEED, You saw it here first on the Korean War Baby, who accurately foretold in the
future that the Government WOULD make it DIFFICULT to 'terminate with extreme prejudice' all those UNWANTED PREGNANCIES.
LORD help us, and our future brethren in
THIS THING OF OURS-ADOPTION!!!

An overlooked aspect of abortion debate

An overlooked aspect of abortion debate - INSIDE JoongAng Daily
The Korean War Baby is pleased to see continuing Media attention to this subject because it is connected to the issues of This Thing of Ours-Adoption. The way Korean society views one effects the other, even the issue of Low Birth rate levels are interconnected.

“Recently, some local obstetricians declared that they will no longer perform abortions, a practice that is technically illegal in Korea but widely carried out nonetheless because authorities often look the other way.

(The KWB must interject that the authors are very mistaken: Since 1973 laws were passed to give medical reasons and for rape or incest, giving a LEGAL loophole for the practice.)

The move has brought a long-controversial topic back into the spotlight yet again, one that has taken on even greater significance as Korea struggles with a low birthrate.
While the government has taken an aggressive stance on boosting the birthrate - even announcing a crackdown on abortions - some observers say it has overlooked a key aspect of the debate: support for unwed mothers. The lack of such assistance, they say, has given rise to more abortions and therefore contributes directly to the low birthrate.

Again the KWB demurs on the authors’ logic and assumptions. “Lack of assistance…has given rise to more abortions and therefore contributes directly to the low birthrate.” Well this is just wrong,  Rather, women who chose to KEEP their babies has risen from 1998 to 2005 according to their own article here:

“…data compiled by the Korean Women’s Development Institute, the ratio of single women who said they want to keep their babies rose from 1.2 percent in 1998 to 31.7 percent in 2005.”

Notice also this fact:

“A study from 2005 by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs found that 42 percent of abortions involved unwed pregnant women.”

Over and over the KWB sees faulty conclusions when the facts are contrary. See, that means that MARRIED WOMEN are still having , uh, 58 percent of abortions, wonder why? Medical reasons are actually less than 10% percent, could it be women still trying to get SONS? Just guessing. This is why one must check all possible sources of information and draw one’s own conclusions.

The Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Family Affairs also proposes to triple the monthly support.

“Our goal is to not just support unwed mothers in need, but to provide them with resources so that they can stand on their own feet. It is a more effective policy from a long-term perspective,” said Baik Su-hyun, an official with the family policy bureau at the ministry. “It is the first time that a particular subsidy for unwed mothers has been included in the ministry’s budget.” By Kim Jung-soo, Park Sun-young [spark0320@joongang.co.kr]

The Korean War Baby is pleased to see these developments and applauds the members of ASK (AdopteeSolidarityKorea) and TRACK (TruthReconciliationAdopteesCommissionKorea), KoRoot (Website here) as well as MPAK, Adoption Agencies, law firms, assemblypersons, everyone who is involved in This Thing of Ours-Adoption. It does take a village, to bring hope and change…

Korea Can No Longer Avoid Frank Discussion of Abortion

 image
The Chosun Ilbo (English Edition)
“…Until the 1960s some 50,000 abortions were performed every year in the U.S. The year after Roe v. Wade, the number surged to 750,000. It rose to 1.6 million in 1980, or about one abortion for every 2.25 live births, and remained at that level since.
According to a 2005 study by the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, an estimated 350,000 abortions are performed in Korea each year, not much less than the 450,000 infants born annually. The medical community believes that the real number of abortions is higher than the official estimate, with some even estimating it to be around 1.5 million per year.

The Korean government implemented aggressive measures to reduce childbirth during the period of rapid industrialization in the 1960s and 70s. Just until 10 years ago, state medical coverage was denied for families giving birth to a third child. Coupled with a widespread preference for male babies, the government and society turned a blind eye to abortions. Now that it has become imperative to raise the country's birth rate, a lot of attention is being paid to the practice. Some experts say that clamping down on abortions and boosting the number of births to 700,000 could solve the low birth rate problem.
Unlike in the U.S. and Europe where the issue is fiercely debated with serious effects on state policies, abortion has largely been kept out of the arena of public discussion in Korea. It was an uncomfortable fact that everybody was aware of.
Recently the Presidential Council for Future and Vision hastily denied media reports that it would include a crackdown on abortions in a policy plan to be announced next week to deal with the low birth rate problem. Abortion is an extremely sensitive issue, which not only involves legal and ethical concerns but also requires considering public perceptions and social attitudes toward it. But we should no longer avoid discussing it openly.
By Chosun Ilbo columnist Oh Tae-jin
Well, indeed…perhaps we shall see the swing back to reducing the number of abortions, whatever the real figures, and the attitudes of the people changing, slowly. Don’t stop praying. Fifty percent of child-bearing women in Korea have had 1 (or more) abortions. This Dirty secret that is not a secret can only change when the Hearts of this nation change.

Casting Stones?-Not the KWB!

The Korean War Baby wants to make something VERY CLEAR. He does not condone the act of abortion, but he does NOT conDEMN any who are involved, not the woman, doctors or nurses, bio-fathers, NO ONE. But for the grace of God, the KWB should be stoned numerous times for uncountable crimes/sins against humanity. If God truly counts “Thoughts of sin” well, he is toast. No, someone said, “hate the sin, love the sinner”.
This story says it all…

Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery Bruegel
Image via Wikipedia
“Woman Caught in Adultery”
New Testament: Gospel of John (NKJV) e-sword 'electronic bible'
John 8:1  But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
Joh 8:2  And early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him. And He sat down and taught them.
Joh 8:3  And the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman taken in adultery. And standing her in the midst,
Joh 8:4  they said to Him, Teacher, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
(Notice- where is the man? They let him go, what’s up with that?)

Joh 8:5  Now Moses in the Law commanded us that such should be stoned. You, then, what do you say?
Joh 8:6  They said this, tempting Him so that they might have reason to accuse Him. But bending down, Jesus wrote on the ground with His finger, not appearing to hear.
(You got to love this-Jesus does NOT appear to hear the accusations against us, those who have put their faith in Him and been adopted into His Family)
Joh 8:8  And again bending down, He wrote on the ground.
Joh 8:9  And hearing, and being convicted by conscience, they went out one by one, beginning at the oldest, until the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

Joh 8:7  But as they continued to ask Him, He lifted Himself up and said to them, He who is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.

(See the oldest realized that Jesus had them trapped, if they threw a stone now, they would be claiming to be perfect, without sin. Couldn’t do THAT. One by one, they left and dropped their rocks)

Joh 8:10  And bending back up, and seeing no one but the woman, Jesus said to her, Woman, where are the ones who accused you? Did not one give judgment against you?
Joh 8:11  And she said, No one, Lord. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I give judgment. Go, and sin no more.

Someone, somewhere said something like this, “Be careful pointing a finger at someone…there are three fingers pointing back at you!” No, sir. The Korean War Baby cannot know the mind of a woman caught in THAT situation. To be forced to make that CHOICE? As a Man, who can know a woman’s thoughts, pain, suffering, or point a finger of blame? A few of the Pro-LIFE folks mistakenly shout ‘murderer’ and other insane things at women going into clinics. This ought NOT to be.
That is WRONG on many levels! It is ‘throwing stones’ and giving judgment, not demonstrating the Love of God. Some who disagree with issues of abortion, adoption, Life or Choice, all have their different views and the KWB honors their rights.

The story of how the very woman, using the pseudonym of Jane Roe, of “Roe vs. Wade”, Norma Mccorvey no longer believes in abortion. How did that happen? She was won over by a young girl, who was almost aborted, showing her the love of God. Norma gradually came to repentance, forgiveness, and healing. Now that is something to say, Amen, so be it!
Peace to All.
