THIS THING OF OURS-ADOPTION

THE KOREAN WAR BABY

My name is Don Gordon BELL and I am one of the earliest of the first generation of KAD's (Korean ADoptees). The Korean War had been settled by Armistice three years before I left war-torn Seoul, Korea, on May 21, 1956. It was the first plane of twelve 'war babies' processed thru the Harry Holt Adoption Program. Read more of MY STORY on My Pages.
I grew up in a typical middle-class family of English-Scottish roots in greater Los Angeles, Ca, USA. Memories faded, Korean language was 'lost' and I did not know anything about the country of my birth until I met Korean Marines in Vietnam while serving with the US Marines. It was my first exposure to real Korean people. I was not completely aware of how prejudiced most Koreans thought towards a Half-Breed like me. I learned what "Tuigi" meant, a Korean word for a "Child of a Foreign devil". Oh, wonderful.

All my life I always had to answer the question: "What ARE you?" and I simply would tell 'my story'. It was not a big deal for me, for my Adoptive Parents had taught me that being an American meant that WE were from many countries. I never 'wished to be White' and just learned to stand up for my own identity. MY Identity was as an American, with mixed heritage. I did not know what being "Korean" meant but often wondered about my roots, and what my birth father's ethnicity. Mexican, Native Americans, and Spanish people would tell me that I had their 'genes' for sure. Little did I know they were right!

After college, I traveled to Manila and for ten years I lived in the Philippines. I was excepted as a 'mestizo' and fit into the former Spanish colony. I was a B-movie Character Actor,
working on international and local films, enjoying a 'crazy and wild' abandonment. Then a life changing experience gave me faith in a personal Higher Being. After walking away from the film business, I lived back in the USA, not sure of my direction in life finding work in construction, finish carpentry, door hanging, and many other jobs I'd like to forget.

In 1991, at 38, I attended a Holt Heritage Camp that was a great experience and really began my own journey of Adoption Identity search. I had never thought much of my Korean culture, though I always felt proud of being "HALF-Korean" and "half-Something".

In 1994 I came back to Seoul, Korea, with my church Vineyard Christian Fellowship, and was invited to stay with a church in East Seoul, for one year. I have lived here since late 1995- re-discovering my "Korean-ness", teaching English and telling my Adoption Story to thousands of Korean students of all ages, helping their understanding of Korean Adoptees. It is one of the issues that Korea is now facing, even for its own secretly adopted children, those who were adopted IN-Country by Koreans who desired a family but due to problems with Infertility secretly adopt.

I was a charter member in 1997 (first dozen members) of GOA'L (Global Overseas Adoptees' Link, founded by Ami Nafzger) and continue to be involved with the complex issues of This Thing of Ours-Adoption. Thousands of KADs have visited Korea over the years, searching for their culture and Some search for birth family. Seventy-five thousand have come, yet only 2,400 plus have found Reunion with Birth family, often with varying results. There are many complexities, many don't want to search concerned about offending their Adoptive Families. Each KAD must decide what they want to do, when to do it, etc.

At 67, I am still 'working thru' my Adoption Identity. Each of YOU need to 'work through' your own understanding and hopefully find forgiveness and healing. Read many different accounts and compare before coming to conclusions. I hope that you will learn what IS happening NOW, in the land of your birth, the Rep. of Korea (South Korea). (See Report Links).

Times are changing, the reasons for 'relinquishment/given up for adoption' have shifted, but there continues to be a need for a multi-tiered approach and understanding of Adoption issues. Slowly, attitudes of Korean society ARE changing for the better. But, the majority continue to feel embarrassment and shame. Thus, Adoption is still shrouded in secrecy even for those who are adopted In-country . There ARE positive signs and movements of NGO's and KAD groups are advocating for the Unwed Mothers. However, two-thirds of pregnant women each year, continue to give up their babies for adoption. One out of four are sent overseas, YET three are secretly adopted in-country. The Myth that "Koreans don't adopt" is false, but they need to open up and hopefully change their shame to pride.

This blog is for EVERYONE, whether you are an Adoptee, Adoptive Family, Birth Family or involved in Adoption in ANY way as a professional, social worker, official, etc, from Korea or the world. We examine the complex issues and personal journeys that we, domestic and overseas adoptees, have to face and sort out in This Thing of Ours-Adoption. (Use the Search function to check for Posts on various topics, TransRacial, Tran-Cultural, Multi-Cultural families, Domestic, Civil Code Law Adoptions, InterCountry Adoption, etc.)

I personally have come to a compromised, nuanced position on this thing of ours-adoption. I advocate a Multi-tiered Plan that tries to be balanced, realistic, fair to all.

UPDATE: Living in the Philippines since 2010, at first teaching students from several countries as an Online Tutor, based in Makati, Metro Manila. I was working on a Digital Library for Online Tutoring or ELearning; developing an agritourism farm; and Overseas Retirement Care for foreigners needing 24/7 health care.

Then some 18 months ago, in July of 2012 I met with Andrew Leavold, a crazy film obsessed Aussie who helped "pull me back into film making".

WHEW! Lot on my plate. I have also been learning much about the Filipino society's very different viewpoints on unwed motherhood and adoption.

As of Sept. 2012, I worked on an Indie Film, "Baybayin, the Palawan Script", directed by Auraeus Solito, and international award winning Filipino director. I had a role in the film and explored my hobby as a STILLS Photographer. Currently I have quit all teaching, co-writing on an international film that will be done in 3D and CGI effects. I am back in the film-making business and I love it. I have continued to act in Independent and international films and in many projects worked as Stills/Bts Photographer. I cover film festivals, events, and continue to try to improve my Game. Semi-retired but love to keep active, now exploring mirrorless 4K cameras but still a Canon Guy.

China Girl- Power Encounter

China Girl-Continued from “Drums? You Have Drums!”

“Aaaiiiggh!!” The scream startled the KWB as he was giving out tissues to crying prayees at the ministry time at Vineyard Christian Fellowship, Anaheim, California. Instinctively he turned in the direction to see a young Asian woman thrashing wildly as she screamed bloody murder at the top of her lungs. Finally she fell backward, landing on several people hard. Everyone was scattering away from her as she rolled around on the floor, continuously yelling, wailing, and kicking out.

This was something he had seen before, a manifestation of someone under a spiritual encounter with pure evil, reacting as though “something” was attacking them. Whether it was a psychosis of the mind or actual “demon” that caused this reaction it was chilling to hear. No one approached her, though a woman with a Ministry Team badge was trying to stop her from crashing into others who were on the floor.

With no Badge or training the KWB hesitated, then armed with only his trusty box of Kleenex he leaped into action. He stepped up next to her as she rolled, blocking with one foot then dropped as gently as he could on top of her. It took some doing but he quickly pinned her arms across her chest and was straddled above her hips. Her strength was almost superhuman for her petite size.

She looked Chinese or Vietnamese, short and petite, in her early twenties. But she was filled with adrenalin or ‘something’ because it was all he could do to hold her down. One arm jerked loose, knocked his glasses away and tore at his face before he caught it and pinned her arms to the floor. A woman with a Ministry Team Badge made the mistake of leaning over and received a perfectly aimed phlegm.

The woman with a Badge came back but kept her distance. She told the KWB to pray, “Hey, I don’t have training, I need a badge”. She told him “You don’t need a badge, I’m right here, pray against Ancestral spirits”. (Sure, she wasn’t exactly near, keeping six feet away as the lovely China Girl continued screaming and spitting at him or anyone who came too close.)

So, following instructions he boldly commanded, “I come against all Darkness, in the name of…” He had no time to finish because it was like throwing gasoline on a fire, bucking like a bronco and howling in rage, a deep “Voice” came out from her cursing in, Chinese? Yes it must be, it wasn’t Vietnamese.

Now at this point a curious and strange thing occurred…Suddenly, the ‘face’ of the China Girl was twisted into a mask- almost exactly like the kind you see in Korea with down-turned mouth, eyes bulging, every facial muscle contorted in ways humanly impossible. Her eyes rolled backwards until only the whites showed. She was hyper-ventalating loudly, her chest heaving up and down. This was getting really “Exorcist” stuff now.

Who are YOU?!! WE KNOW about YOU!!” The voices were deep and chilling and her distorted eyes looked menacingly at him. What? They KNEW him? Well, that was for certain from his past sinful life, but could they TELL everything outloud? What was he doing here?

Marvelous! He was about to be outted by a demon? A public revelation of his Sins, oh crap. Where was the woman with the Badge! ‘You have NO Badge, you need a stinkin badge!the Voice mocked. Panic and Fear knocked violently at his mind. Doubts assailed him, ‘what do you think you are doing? You are one of us!

The China Girl added another well aimed shot of phlegm, and one hand got loose and tried to grab his privates. Insults and injury, this was indeed more than he had bargained for. He wondered when the ‘cavalry’ would arrive and HELP. He got the hand pinned down again, shocked at the terrorfying look in 'it's eyes'.

Then a hand rested on his left shoulder, a strong firm hand, it must be one of the pastors he thought but was too busy to glance backwards. It instantly gave him confidence and reassurance. Courage welled up…and righteous anger. He spied a cross around the China Girl’s neck, she was a Christian! They can’t do This to her!

He raised his voice and commanded in a Marine Corps Drill Instructor’s VOICE, En El Nombre De Jesus, Silencio!!” That seemed to work! Perhaps Spanish worked better than English. Her body arched up like a bronco then shook violently as though a great conflict was raging within. But the growling diminished in volume and fierceness.

The woman with the Badge, came up behind him and gave him guidance. “Ancestoral spirits, pray against them.” “I break the power of every Ancestoral spirit in your family history”. Following her suggestions the KWB continued to pray until gradually the China Girl’s normal face returned.

With one last deep sigh and a violent shudder, her body went totally limp, relaxed. Her breathing slowed down, then the China Girl opened her eyes with clarity and confusion, perhaps wondering why he was pinning her down. She smiled sweetly, “Ah, Hello”. Thinking this could be a trick, the KWB stayed on top. The woman with the Badge looked closely, declared that it was now safe to let her get up. Finally convinced that she was okay, he raised himself off and helped her sit up.

He turned to thank the person who had prayed with him throughout, silently giving him confidence. There was no one nearby! Strange he was there just moments ago. He asked the woman with a Badge, but she just shook her head, “Who? I didn’t notice anyone”. She turned back to ‘post-prayer counseling’ the China Girl.

Tim came over to the KWB and picked up the crushed Kleenex box. “Tim, who was standing behind me? He never spoke but I FELT his hand on my shoulder.” Tim looked at him curiously, “Don’t know, bud, I looked over at you several times. No one but Cheryl was anyway near you guys. That girl was manifesting something fierce.”

No, I felt a hand on my shoulder for long time…are you sure?”
Tim looked at him, “I’ve had the same thing happen couple of times…might have been an angel. Here, you got spit all over you!” handing him tissues from the Kleenex box. The KWB made his way to the restroom, trying to process and figure out what had happened. Was it psychotic rage…or did the China Girl actually have ‘ancestral spirits’? He had always been intrigued by supernatural knowledge and power but this was Face to Face stuff. Though frightened by it all, he was also drawn in.

The next day at the Tape Lending Booth, John Wimber’s wife Carol came to the booth. Carol told him he should sign up for Ministry Training Classes starting the next week. He told her he didn’t think he was ready yet for that. She told him, “Looks like you were doing fine last night, a little bit rough technique-wise. We don’t usually sit on people when we pray for them,” she laughed. He signed up that day and took all the classes they had over the next few years. In a couple of months, he even HAD A BADGE.

He was soon on both Small and Large Ministry Teams, “Doing the Stuff” as they said at Vineyard. Over the next several years the KWB travel to England, Germany, South Africa. He would see many other amazing and hard to believe things. Power encounters between spiritual forces, physical healings, emotional and mental healings, things he did not fully understand.

Many are fascinated by the supernatural, is it real or just movie stuff? Have you had 'power encounter' experiences in the supernatural?

  2. The KWB spoke with 'Anonymous' back in Manila last November . Yes, on March 2, 1985 in the KWB's apartment he received prayer from two Catholic Christian friends. Soon he will post the incredible experience from his own perspective, and from Anonymous' remembrance.
Hmmm, maybe it should just be in the book...
