Sunrise in Manila-I took this from my friend Henry’s rooftop back in September last year when I first came back to the Philippines. Henry has been a great friend, we met back in the Apocalypse Now filming in the late ‘70s, and he has opened his apartment to me several times. We have enjoyed chatting about old times in the film business and currently Henry is performing in the “Sound of Music”, a long running popular musical in Manila.
I am living in Makati now at La Casa Esse, owned by a Filipino family the Santillans. I have a rooftop and can see almost 360 from the 4th floor. I am working at a Language School and helping to develop several Websites for English Learning.
The past year I left Korea in May, after living there for 16 years. I travelled throughout the USA, meeting with past friends, family, and new friends from the internet. I touched base again with America and what being an American really is all about. Everywhere I saw the variety of what makes us American-the different people from all lands who come here or were born here. The many who make up the composite of the mixed up cultures, somewhat into a Melting Pot, but I knew within myself that This is America the many differences, yet we are the United States of America. My identity is that, it is safe in that knowledge. I do not try to ‘become’ what my natural/birth mother was, a Korean. I am of course a mixed-blood, but all who move or come from another country are also in a sense Mixed-Cultural until the grasp entirely that being an American does not mean that they give up their own roots.
I move forward, looking for my own new course. I want to finish my book on adoption and my own life’s journey. I know that many who find this blog are Korean Adoptees (Adults now) or even others in This Thing of Ours-Adoption, more than just an Adoption Triad but social workers, adoption agency staff, government officials, etc. Some were adopted in other countries, some are angry that they lost their culture/language/family, many other realize that perhaps things just were impossible for their mothers (sometimes fathers), SO many different stories from the entire spectrum. I encourage all to seek out the stories of many, then compare and find your own truth and identity. Find healing, forgiveness, whatever you need to make your own life more meaningful and full.
I am the a Korean War Baby, one of the first to leave the war-torn land of Korea. I am still learning and dealing with my own life, hopefully some of you will find help and avoid some of my own mistakes. I wish you all the best. I will be blogging more soon.
